How to count words, characters and reading time

Word Counter measures text you type, paste or open from a file. It reports words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and lines, estimates reading and speaking time, checks a limit you set and lists repeated words. The text stays in this tab; nothing is uploaded and no account is needed.

Word Counter

Count words, characters and sentences, with reading time and a limit you set.

What you can do

  • Count words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and lines, with emoji and accented characters counted as one.
  • Estimate reading and speaking time at adjustable words-per-minute speeds, and set your own word or character limit.
  • List the ten most repeated words with an optional common-word filter, then copy the stats or download a TXT report of the numbers.

How to use this app

  1. Type or paste text, or open a UTF-8 .txt, .md or .markdown file.
  2. Adjust the reading and speaking speeds, set an optional word or character limit and choose whether to filter common words from the repeated-words list.
  3. Read the counts and progress bar, then copy the stats or download the TXT report, which contains numbers only.

Limits and privacy

  • Text can run to 2,000,000 characters and files up to 6 MB. No platform limits are bundled, so enter the limit you need yourself.
  • Sentence counts are rule-based and times are estimates. Chinese, Japanese and Thai word breaks depend on the browser. There are no grammar, readability or plagiarism checks. Reloading clears the text.

Common questions

Are emoji and accented letters counted correctly?

Each emoji or accented character counts as one character.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Counting happens in this tab. The TXT report holds the numbers only, not your text.

Is Word Counter free, and do I need an account?

Yes, it is free. Word Counter runs in your browser with no account or payment details, and it never uses OnePassApps credits.
