How to generate a random password or passphrase

Password Generator makes random passwords or word-based passphrases from the settings you choose. Random numbers come from the browser's secure generator. Results stay in this tab, are never sent anywhere and are not saved, so copy what you need before you leave. No account is needed.

Password Generator

Generate strong passwords and passphrases in your browser, with a strength estimate.

What you can do

  • Make passwords of 8 to 128 characters with lower-case, upper-case, digit and symbol options, and optionally avoid look-alike characters.
  • Make passphrases of 3 to 12 words with a separator, optional capitals and an optional number.
  • Generate up to ten results at once, show, hide and copy each one, and see a strength estimate in bits from the settings.

How to use this app

  1. Choose Password for random characters or Passphrase for random words. Results appear straight away.
  2. Set the length or number of words, and the character types or separator. Match the site's rules, for example untick Symbols if it rejects them.
  3. Show, hide and copy a result, then paste it into the site or your password manager. Select Generate new for a fresh batch.

Limits and privacy

  • Passwords run from 8 to 128 characters, passphrases from 3 to 12 words and a batch from 1 to 10 results. There is no file export.
  • The strength label is an estimate from your settings, not from the finished text. The tool does not check for breaches or manage passwords, and some sites restrict length or symbols. Reloading discards the results.

Common questions

Where do the random numbers come from?

From your browser's secure random number generator, not Math.random. Results are made in this tab and nothing is sent or stored.

How is strength worked out?

It is an estimate in bits from the settings (length and character pool, or word count and word list size). Treat it as a guide, not a guarantee.

Is Password Generator free, and do I need an account?

Yes, it is free. Password Generator runs in your browser with no account or payment details, and it never uses OnePassApps credits.
