How to compare screen dimensions and viewing angles
Screen & Cinema Planner compares the visible geometry of two flat screens. Enter each diagonal and aspect ratio, then choose a shared seating distance. The same-scale outlines and measurement table show how width, height, area and viewing angle change. These calculations describe your inputs; they do not choose a television or prescribe a viewing distance.

Screen & Cinema Planner
Compare screen sizes, aspect ratios, and viewing angles at your seating distance.
What you can do
- Compare common aspect ratios or enter a custom ratio, using inch and centimetre diagonal measurements.
- See width, height, square-metre area, percentage area difference and horizontal and vertical fields of view.
- Export a standalone SVG with solid and dashed screen outlines, so the comparison does not depend on colour alone.
How to use this app
- 01Enter both screen diagonals and select their actual aspect ratios. Use the manufacturer's ratio when a marketed size is approximate.
- 02Set the seating distance in metres, centimetres or inches. Switching units preserves physical dimensions; correct any invalid measurement beside its field.
- 03Compare the outline and table, then download the SVG. Keep your input values separately if you want to recreate the comparison after leaving.
Limits and privacy
- Dimensions describe visible flat-screen geometry and exclude frames, stands, mounting clearance, room layout, curved screens, resolution and content letterboxing.
- Viewing angles assume a screen centred in front of the viewer. They are not comfort, health or safety recommendations. Inputs remain in tab memory only.
Common questions
Why can equal diagonals have different widths?
Diagonal measures the corner-to-corner distance. Changing the aspect ratio changes how that distance divides into width and height, and also changes the visible area.
How is the viewing angle calculated?
For each dimension, the angle is 2 × atan(size ÷ (2 × distance)). Screen size and distance use matching physical units before the result is shown in degrees.
Is Screen & Cinema Planner free, and do I need an account?
Yes, it is free. Screen & Cinema Planner runs in your browser with no account or payment details, and it never uses OnePassApps credits.
